“Share your story.” Yep, we’ve all heard it a million times in the online marketing world.

But let’s be real if you’re new to the online space, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking…

“Wait, what story? My life is pretty normal… do I even have a story?”

Spoiler alert: You absolutely do. And guess what? Your story isn’t supposed to be a resume. You’re not here to give an autobiography in one reel or post. No one wants to hear your life story in a single sitting (except maybe your grandma).

What Does “Share Your Story” Really Mean?

Sharing your story is about connecting. It’s not about crafting an epic novel; it’s about revealing relatable, real-life moments that will click with your ideal audience. It could be a win, a struggle, a funny mishap, or a lesson learned. These moments sprinkle your personality into your content—whether you’re witty, funny, serious, or laid-back, the way you share those moments gives your audience a taste of who you are.

“But I Shared My Story Last Week, So Now What?”

I hear this all the time: “I shared my story in a reel last week, now what do I talk about?” Here's the thing—sharing your story isn’t a one-and-done deal. It’s not a one-time confession where you spill your guts and then sit there awkwardly wondering what to do next. It’s an ongoing conversation. In fact, your “story” is made up of many smaller stories: bite-sized, relatable experiences that keep the connection alive.

Think about real life. When you meet a friend, you don’t just dump your whole life story on them at once, right? (If you do… maybe rethink that strategy.) You build friendships through shared experiences, common interests, and little anecdotes here and there.

Online, it’s the same thing. You’re not trying to sell yourself—you’re just making friends, but virtually. Your audience is like that friend you grab coffee with, chat about the highs and lows, and swap advice or support. Over time, you build that connection and trust. THIS is what leads to your audience trusting your recommendations and ultimately clicking your link. 

How to Start Sharing Your Story

  1. Pick Relatable Moments
    Don’t overthink it. Start small. Your audience doesn’t need to hear about your entire childhood. Instead, share moments that tie into your journey as a marketer, entrepreneur, or even just a regular human being who has dreams, struggles, and triumphs. Did you struggle to get started in your business? Share that. Did you have a win, no matter how small? Share that too. We share moments to relate to our ideal audience. (Remember it's about them)
  2. Be Consistent, Not Comprehensive
    You don’t need to tell the whole story at once. Share in pieces. Maybe today, you talk about the fear of starting something new. Next week, you talk about that one time everything fell apart—and how you bounced back. Keep it consistent, but spread it out.
  3. Inject Your Personality
    Your story isn’t just what you say; it’s how you say it. Are you funny? Great, throw in some humor. More serious? Lean into that tone. The key is to show up as yourself. People connect with realness, not perfection.
  4. Talk to One Person, Not the Whole World
    I share this all the time, because it's that important. Imagine you’re having a one-on-one conversation with someone who just happens to be a couple of steps behind you. You don’t have to be the expert with all the answers. You just need to be someone who’s a little further along the path and can offer some insight. Speak to that person. This keeps your content relatable and approachable. We cover this right in day 5 of the Learn Launch Lead Challenge.
  5. Share Your Struggles, Not Just Wins
    Wins are great and all, but struggles? Those build connection. Everyone loves an underdog, so don’t be afraid to share when things aren’t picture-perfect. Show the messy middle…how you’re figuring it out as you go. Your audience will appreciate your honesty and be more likely to stick around because not only do they see that YOU get what they are dealing with, you also have a way through it. (Once again, remember it's about THEM.) 

 

Remember, You’re Not Applying for Friendship

Let’s circle back to the whole “life resume” thing. In real life, when you meet someone new, you don’t hand them a detailed list of your life’s achievements and ask if they want to be your friend.

That’d be weird, right?

So why are so many of us doing that online? Stop trying to prove yourself or sell your life story. Instead, focus on sharing pieces of your journey, pieces that your ideal audience can see themselves in.

Your story is about creating connections, not closing deals. It’s about being relatable, approachable, and, most importantly, real.

Final Thought: You Deserve to Be Heard

One last tip? Share from a place of confidence.

Your story, however big or small you think it is, deserves to be heard. You don’t need to have a jaw-dropping rags-to-riches tale to make an impact. Just share what you’ve learned, how you’ve grown, and what you’re still figuring out. You don’t need to be an expert, but you do need to believe in the value of your voice.

People love authenticity – and a story like this keeps your audience engaged and connected to you.

2. Waiting at Your Kid’s Practice – GO LIVE!

You’re sitting in the car while your kid’s at practice, the perfect opportunity to go live on social media. No need to overthink it! Just hit that “Go Live” button and start talking. Share a bit about your journey, offer a tip, or answer a question from your audience. Going live creates real-time connection, and your followers will love the authenticity of catching you in the moment.

3. Making Dinner or Doing Chores – Hit Record for B-Roll

We all have to cook, clean, or do some sort of chore during the day. Why not use that time to capture some behind-the-scenes content? Set your phone up on the counter or a shelf and hit record while you’re working. You can use that B-roll later for videos, overlay it with tips, or add a motivational quote. It’s easy content that requires zero extra effort.

4. Lunch Break – Check Your Insights

People love to learn new things, especially if it helps them solve a problem or improve their skills. It also doesn’t need to be presented like SCHOOL/PROFESSOR BORING. Allow your personality to shine through! After you create it, ask yourself – Would someone SAVE THIS post? 

Example: If you’re in the fitness niche, create a video or blog post on “5 Quick Home Workouts to Stay Fit Without Equipment.” Use step-by-step instructions and visual demonstrations to educate your audience.

2. Inspirational Value

Everyone needs a little inspiration now and then. Share stories or content that motivate your audience to take action or feel uplifted. We love to feel good, and we LOVE it when others help us feel good. Any post that makes us smile, feel motivated, excited, driven, or a kick in the pants we might need. 

Example: In the Entrepreneur niche, share a multi part series of morning motivation, mantras, or tips to stay driven. 

3. Entertainment Value

Sometimes, people just want to be entertained. Light-hearted, funny, or emotionally engaging content can be incredibly valuable.

Example: If you’re in the cooking niche, create a fun and engaging video of a cooking challenge, like “Can I Make a Gourmet Meal with Only 5 Ingredients?” This not only entertains but also showcases your creativity and skill. This is also where you can show a dinner fail, and that your human and relatable to your audience.

Think back for me…

As a child, was there that unspoken (and sometimes spoken) expectation that you better choose to become either a lawyer or a doctor? Maybe an astronaut? 

And if you didn't choose one of those, it felt like you were choosing misery

Well, guess what? 

It was all a big fat lie. 

 

The truth is that no profession guarantees happiness or success.

Thursday's guest is a single mom who spent eight years in college and over $200k in tuition loans to become a doctor. 

But just six months into her career…

she was burnt out… 

miserable… 

unfulfilled. 

Like many moms, she was often filled with guilt, leaving her young child all day. 

She couldn't imagine doing this for another 30 years.

Your Weekly Legend for March 19th-25th

There’s lots a talk surrounding a possible TikTok ban. It’s sorta the elephant in the room.

I'm not going to dive into the political or the Meta business agenda behind this today…

Instead let’s dive into what this possible ban could mean for you and your business as far as day to day operations. (Plus at the end I share a few algorithm updates!)

First and foremost…If you’re setting up and growing your business properly, it will end up as a minimal shift.  

It’s really not much different than an account getting shut down and learning how to build traffic on other platforms. 

When it comes to using ANY social media platform, we gotta remember this: 

  • We’re using social media platforms rent-free
  • They’re borrowed spaces
  • We don’t own them
  • We don’t control them
  • We only utilize and learn how to capitalize from them 

A possible TikTok ban is not an excuse to quit.
(or an excuse to not get started)

No platform determines the existence of your business. 

While it's understandable to feel nervous about losing access to such a popular platform, I want to put your worries at ease.  

How consumers interact online will constantly change and evolve. 

Here are a few reminders to settle your TikTok nerves surrounding a possible ban. 

First, it’s important to remember that social media is just a tool in the marketer's arsenal. Just like we use tools/software for funnels and emails. Social media platforms are traffic tools. 

Yes, there’s no denying, TikTok has proven to be a powerful tool for reaching your target audience fast, BUT it’s not the only social media platform available. Other platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and even Twitter can also reach a wider audience. 

There are wildly successful online businesses that still haven’t touched TikTok. 

Is it useful…absolutely. Is it required for any level of success…nope. It’s not your only option. 

It never was and never will be your only option. 

If TikTok makes you uneasy…don’t use it! Find the platform you are most comfortable with using and begin to build your business there. New social media platforms are always emerging, and the next big thing could be just around the corner.

Secondly, even if TikTok were to be banned, its creators and audience don’t disappear with it. 

The creators still exist, and the consumer desire for short-form content is still there, it will just move to a different platform. 

This is why it's CRUCIAL to BUILD YOUR LIST. Your email list is completely YOURS. You own it. No one can take that piece of communication from you. Your list and followers can easily move with you to the next hottest platform with ease when you utilize your list. By staying adaptable and open to new ideas and strategies, marketers can ensure that they’re always using the most effective tools available to reach their target audience.

This is also why it’s important to stay plugged into an online community, always be open to learning and growing, and stay ahead of the ever-changing world of online marketing. 

Lastly…

Every single business needs marketing to survive. 

 

Learning marketing skills, and staying up to date on new trends, will always keep you in demand. 

If TikTok disappears tomorrow, consumers will still be buying, consuming content, and still looking for recommendations…where that happens will just shift. 

Be ready and open to shift with it utilizing the marketing skills you're learning.

Take a peak and you'll notice longer videos are landing on your FYP. If you're on TT, give a few longer videos a try if you've only been creating shorter ones. 

P.P.S. Instagram has released new updates! A whole collection of updates and recommendations were shared on a zoom between IG and top creators for what they want to see right now. (Remember marketing is always changing!) Here are two juicy updates you need to be aware of: 1.IG wants to see accounts posting stories daily 2. IG is rewarding accounts that post to the grid daily. (So it's time to kick up how often you post)

Your Weekly Legend for March 5th-11th

Everyone hates a bully…but we all have that one. That one bully that knows our biggest worries, fears, and weaknesses.

On top of all of that, this particular bully is the ultimate killer of our dreams. It’s like they must have some secret access to our heads and can hear our deepest worries. Like they have some special spell or mind-reading gift that provides full access to every thought, dream, fear, and worry that crosses our mind.

Well, no special gifts are needed here. Your biggest bully, well frankly, is YOU. 

We are our biggest enemy.

We are the one that stops action toward dreams. We are the ones creating excuses why we can’t do this or that, and ultimately quit. We are the little voice repeating our biggest worries over and over to ourselves. 

So how do we overcome it? You gotta put your dreams above your fear. 

As Dave shared this week…You gotta show up and glow up! Show up for yourself and keep growing into greatness.

A perfect example of this came from the comedian Jo Koy. 

Just this week I was watching his most recent special. This guy always leaves me absolutely rolling in laughter! Like full-on tears streaming down my face. He was absolutely hilarious and then a small switch happened in the middle of the show…

He shared a piece of his story with the audience that I didn’t realize. 

This man was turned down by Netflix 8 times. 

His ultimate dream for himself was to one day have a Netflix special. And they kept telling him no. He wasn’t going to stop. He finally decided, maybe they need to see it first? 

He was going to fund the entire project upfront, do all the production, all the editing required, and use pretty much all of his savings to create it. 

It was going to be risky. 

It was scary as hell. 

At this point, he had already been turned down 7 times.

Jo Koy kept going after his dream because he couldn’t bear to show his son what it looked like to give up on a dream. 

That was his “WHY.”

He didn't want his son to learn that quitting on a dream was an option.

2 days before they filmed Jokoy’s first special, Netflix called again…

He got excited…

Maybe it’s all finally coming together. 

The rep shared…We heard you are producing your own show, we just need you to know…

We really DON’T want it so if there’s time to cut your losses, do it. 

Jo was crushed.

The bully's voice in his head got really loud. He could listen to the voice inside his head telling him to quit, or he could listen to his heart knowing he needed to keep going after his dream. He needed to show his son, no one determines your destiny. He filmed that special. His team then shopped it around to different networks. 

Netflix called again…”We want it.” 

Fast forward to today, Jo Koy now has 4 specials on this network. His journey to a Netflix special is a powerful example of the importance of believing in oneself. To turn off the bully voice, and listen to the cheerleader instead. Even when faced with repeated rejection, Jo Koy never gave up on his dream. His perseverance and determination ultimately paid off.

Could you imagine where he would be right now if he walked away and quit after the first no…

Or the 3rd

Or the 5th

Or the 7th…

Or the 8th…when he took on so much risk with no guarantee of success? He believed in himself and his abilities. I think today is a great day to tell the bully in your own head to shut it and let that cheerleader have a bit more voice.
