When it comes to posting on social media, have you ever thought…

“What should I talk about?”

“I don’t know what to say!”

“Who’s even going to see this?”

If so, you are not alone. Entrepreneurs everywhere struggle with how to talk about their online business, especially on social media.

We get it! Putting yourself out there can be scary, especially at first. The good news is that your biggest hurdle is…yourself. And after that first post, hitting “publish” can only get easier.

If you’re just getting started in your online business, here are 5 pieces of content you can create TODAY to boost engagement, add followers, and build your online presence:

  1. Share why and/or how you get started

Everyone has a unique reason for starting their online business. What’s yours?

Did you set out to…

  • help others solve a problem
  • create a more flexible lifestyle for yourself or your family
  • make extra cash to pay off debt, save for a vacation, or plan for retirement
  • visit friends and family more often
  • pursue a hobby
  • enjoy more of life and less of work?

The reasons are endless! So why did YOU get started in your online business?

Tell your story clearly and concisely. Viewers will appreciate getting to know the human behind your business.

2. Talk about what you know.

Many online business owners get caught up in what to say on social media, especially early on. Maybe you haven’t made many sales yet, or you might not have worked with a ton of clients.

The solution?

Talk about what you DO know!

  • Film clips from your life and make a “day in the life” reel.
  • Mention a lesson you learned from a course, article, podcast, or book
  • Retell an interesting conversation and how it relates to your business
  • Talk about what’s changed for you since starting your business
  • Address your challenges and how you’re overcoming them

No matter what your online business is about, one thing is true: you’ve experienced a problem or challenge before, and you’ve found a way to fix it.

People facing that same challenge will be interested to hear what you’re doing…and if it’s working…

Tip: Be HONEST in your videos! Don’t ever lie. Viewers will see right through you.

And remember, no matter how fresh or new your online business is, you already know more than the people who haven’t started yet. Use that to your advantage.

3. Be The Reporter

“Show me some proof!”

Many online business owners think they need to show proof of their own success…before they even get started.

First of all, that’s impossible. And second, it’s simply not necessary.

Even if you’ve NEVER made a sale, worked with a client, or posted a single thing online, it doesn’t matter. You have to start somewhere.

Chances are, other people in your industry have already been successful. Act as a reporter and share the successes of others.

To find those great shareable stories, keep your eyes and ears open. You might stumble across terrific content through folks you meet in real life, on social channels, in news articles, podcasts, blogs…just about anywhere.

What are they doing? How are they doing it? What’s worked for them? Borrow the credibility of others who’ve been around a while – their success can help you boost your own.

Again, be truthful in your storytelling and always give credit where credit is due!

In time, you’ll be able to share your own wins and highlights like a pro.

4. Talk about what you do, or what you’re trying to do.

What actually is it that you do? How does your business work? What are the parts? How does your business solve a problem for others?

This is a storyline you’ll need to tell over and over again. Be sure to explain what your online business is and the basics of how it works.

You don’t have to have a master’s degree to explain what you do to someone who’s unfamiliar – in fact, the simpler the better.

5. How has your life changed since you got started?

Whether you’ve been at this online business for a week or a year, your life has likely changed in some way. Perhaps in many ways!

Have you gained some technical skills? Tell your audience. Learning new apps, platforms and systems can be a BIG hurdle for someone just starting out.

How has your mindset shifted since getting started in your business? Maybe there’s something you used to believe but now know differently…

Have your loved ones noticed a change in you or your confidence level? Talk about that.

Whatever the changes that you feel, know or experience, highlight them and share with your audience. Share your victories, large and small. People like to follow other successful people.

BONUS TIP: Rinse and Repeat

Here’s the beauty of this list: you can refer to it over and over again. In fact, please do!

These five basic storylines will provide you with content in perpetuity. Truthfully, there is NO need to create 50 brand new stories every week. Instead, simply focus on developing a couple of core messages and retell them in 50 different ways.

And lastly…

Be consistent.

No matter where you are in your journey with your online business, staying consistent is the most important thing.

Put these ideas into action, and as always, Be Legendary.
